DAY 7: Proper tourists

Today was our unit day off, to ensure we didn't spend all our time in ikea and macdonalds we spent the morning at Zaanse Schans, a working Dutch village(their answer to our Beamish) to take in a bit of culture, then had an optional visit into Haarlem for a mini city break.

While we had no picture from it, we were lucky enough to be asked to do the Subcamp Flag Break this morning, so it was full uniform (with inspection  beforehand), many thanks to our 12 flack breakers and our guard.

James F

We enjoyed the audio tour round the museum learning many new and interesting facts about the history of Holland. We then moved on to the machines and how classic chocolates and biscuits were made and what machinery was needed.

We then went round the shops inside the windmills, especially having fun in the cheese shop. Finally ending on a little bit of a surprise when I felt a tug on my first aid kit on my belt. After enough pestering and getting my first aid kit ripped by some goat sonny I realised that they were after my stroop waffles.

Nicole, Becca , Matilda, Amelia, Morgan, Finn, George L

After trying every kind of cheese in the cheese factory, we found a guy selling snow cups for €5, but got a deal of 4 for €15. We got one of each flavour (clockwise: strawberry, orange, pomegranate, and green apple) and concluded that pomegranate was the best.

We also found a very friendly goat outside of the cheese factory

Dylan F

Had a great time at Zaanse Schans learning about the fascinating industrial history of the area. The surrounding village was very enjoyable to explore with interesting historical points and beautiful surroundings

Abbey Road was successfully recreated with the help of Dan, Harry, and John Lennon themselves. Very nice

Haarlem Jamborette : Friday 11th August 2023 : Logs

Log 1 – 0742: *post breakfast*

Usual morning. Bit breezy, had breakfast, planes flew.

There's no clouds in the skies today so it's freezing now but it'll be boiling later

Log 2 – 0800:

The flag break is going to happen soon and camp bank is open.

Log 3 – 0830:

Our unit has the opportunity to do the flagbreak for the whole subcamp Yellow. It has been a great morning so far.

Log 4 – 0933:

The sun's really getting warmer now and we're walking off site to who-knows-where. The lake looks tremendous.

Log 5 – 0941:

We just walked past a woodchipper... it was really loud.

Log 6 – 1020:

Guess who missed the train?

Anyway, we're waiting for the next train and we're going on as patrols.

Log 7 – 1027:

We've just gotten onto the first train. There was a mad rush to get everyone on but we're all here. We're getting off the train again at 1030.

Log 8 – 1029:

We have arrived at the first station!

....

Log 10 – 1036:

We're standing next to a double decker train. It's quite cool here in the shade, we're at a place called Sloterdijk. Our next train is at 1048.

Log 11 – 1052:

We've gotten onto the second (and final) train and 6 of 11 members of patrol 2 and Buzz are all sitting on just two seats of the train 😂. They look hilariously silly 😜.

....

Log 17 – 1125:

We've gotten to a fancy houses bit. Its just after the bridge. To quote anonymously: "how have we managed to get from an industrial estate to _this?_" (the houses are fancy but excessively decorated)

Log 18 –1129 :

By the way, I don't mean wind _turbines_, we're actually seeing windmills in a street.

Log 19 – 1135:

I mean we're not lost, we're just hot and sweaty and I have no clue where we're going

....

Log 22 – 1139:

We just crossed 2 more bridges. One small one with ducks, one larger one with cables

....

Log 24 – 1142:

The museum looks cool and it's going to be cooler inside. Hopefully it's a fun museum :)

A breeze has just came 😄🙏

Log 25 – 1146:

It's so much cooler in here to quote 3 people anonymously:

"Gosh"

"Oh gosh"

"Oh golly gosh"

Log 26 – 1157:

The museum is about they local area and the flat land, agriculture, industry and more. We've put our bags down in lockers and we've got audio guides... catch yous in a bit!

Log 27 – 1217:

We've been through the first part of the museum and there's. lots of cool things. There's a chocolate tasting thing ahead and loads of model windmills behind us. I think it's great… but half the patrol just want chocolate.

....

Log 29 – 1224:

We're at the industry bit of the museum. There's no audio guides here, you wouldn't be able to hear it anyway 😂.

Log 30 – 1225:

It's been one minute and our patrol is hooked onto video games

Log 31 – 1228:

The only thing that got them off the last game was another one

Log 32 – 1230:

Well we got off the video games and everyone has donned some fancy dresses. Meanwhile,I'm looking at the machines, some are interactive!

....

Log 35 – 1249:

We're about to go out and explore the windmills which, as Lotti advertised, have cheese, clogs and bakery... And giant Street Waffles

Log 36 – 1300:

We have until 1430 to explore this area, we're all waiting on two people now. It's boiling hot here.

I won't be back for a while

Log 37 – 1544:

We have arrived in Haarlem and now getting off the train.

We walked around a bit earlier I had a nice ice cream which was nice. There was also giant Street Waffles, which are twice as large as large as the ones we have on camp, with nuts and chocolates on top

Log 38 – 1601:

We passed a cool building. We have been walking for about 7 ish minutes in total… we're going to mcdonald's.

Log 39 – 1639:

Where are mcdonald's. We have just eaten a bit too much, but we're all having great fun. 😂.

To quote anonymously: "we all look ridiculous."

Log 40 – 1741

We stopped at a shop on the way back and then waited for everyone else outside the station. We're now inside the station and the train is late so we're all sitting down on the floor of the platform.

....

Log 44 – 1836: *in tent*

We were told that there may be ants in some tents but our tent is ant free :)

*Signing off*

Today's been much more eventful _and_ we had a proper lunch. Curfew tonight is 2230 which is really early compared to the other nights (earliest this far) yet breakfast is 0830 which is the latest we've had. Everyone's confused but the leaders probably want us to catch up on sleep due to the late nights everyone's had…

Tomorrow's Arts, Create and Technology - maybe they've got paracord...

Anyway...

Signing off, Pierce Z.

See you tomorrow

Lastly, we were treated to a performance board Scottish Scout who was busking for Jambos (the jamborette currency), and as is becoming tradition a party in the Mokkie, tonight it was Neon themed.
