DAY 5: Hi-ho-Hi-ho its off on Hikes we go

Today we were Hiking, or rather half the group were hiking the other were completing a scavenger style sightseeing trip.  As their words are better than ours…

Ewan (City Tour)

Today we became true tourists on our day trip to Haarlem on the city hike. During our orienteering hunt we experienced the full city, street by street, visiting historic statues that we definitely remembered what they were about…

Next stop?

Ice cream (of course)

Ewan, Oli, Hollie, Joe, Chloe, Finn, George and Holly visited the cities most famous Italian ice cream shop and had a true taste of Italy

[Note: unfortunately there is no picture of the ice creams they bought as they ate them too quickly!]

Wandering our way through the scenic streets of the city we encountered many old buildings, trees, cyclists and superstore, which we found quite interesting

The city has plenty to offer including many retail stores and a skate shop! (Which kept Ewan happy)

And in true British fashion we ended the day at McDonald’s before catching the bus back to camp…

Group 2 within City Hike all picked out their highlights for the day:

Sam G -“we had a nice leisurely walk today in the city centre”.

Abi H - “We sat on the canals today”.

Alex M - “ we saw some historic part in the city”

Cam B - “ soaking in the hot sun and and walking along the canals”.

Aidan C - “ getting chips sauce from jambo supermark”.

Lily B - “ I enjoyed the scavenger hunt around the city and we finished first in our group."

Eva S and Charlie S - “we enjoyed our boba tea”

Jack W (Triathlon Hike)

We had a great time walking the Triathlon hike today, finishing 4th out of all the groups that hiked it (as far as I know). We kept up a steady pace throughout with, admiring the landscape, sun, and Dylan's oddly impressive knowledge of tanks built from 1918-1939.

The 'Lost Treasure' segment of the hike took us through some scenic Dutch countryside, following a puzzle/map across some very very flat farmland.

The 'City Hike' segment led us to follow a series of pictures through a strange little ghost town, not unakin to the Truman Show. Weird.

And finally, the 'Punisher' segment consisted of a grueling, seemingly endless 6-ish kilometres of road walking, aiming to beat the top times of the Hike HQ leaderboard. All in all, a great hike with alot of variety, and a surprise crawfish sighting on the home stretch. Great stuff. 👍

[Unfortunately they were so focused on completing the hike we have very rewarding photos for their day.. oops!]

This evening was another evening of relaxing, with people opting to enjoy both the oncamp and off camp evening entertainment options.

Tomorrow is trail, our first proper onsite activity, which means we get a slight lie-in, which even if the explorers aren't looking forwards to it, leaders certainly will enjoy a bit more sleep!
